The Ins and outs of Neck Pain - Pain Care Associates in Little Rock
Neck pain is a common complaint among many people, and can often create increased discomfort if treatment is avoided for long periods of time. For some neck pain, there are simple fixes, like adjusting your habits, to lessen the pain. For other situations, the neck pain could originate from a sports injury or some other type of physical trauma that requires more attention to treatment. Fortunately, however, neck pain is rarely a sign of an underlying issue that could be more serious.
Symptoms in Little Rock
Symptoms of neck pain begin with feelings of discomfort around the middle of your back towards the top and sides of your neck. While the neck has the important job of supporting your head, it is vulnerable to injuries and conditions that result in a restricted range of motion. If turning your head, or sitting in a position for extended periods of time causes pain or muscle spasms, you probably suffer from some sort of neck pain.
Causes
There are many different circumstances that could cause injury to your neck that result in pain. Whether it's sleeping on a mattress that doesn't properly support your head, neck, and spine or you carry a heavy bag on one shoulder for too long, it's important to be cautious when it comes to caring for your neck and back.
Muscle strains that often happen from carrying or lifting heavy loads are a common cause of neck pain. Prolonged amounts of time sitting with incorrect form (slouching or hunching) over a computer or desk can also be considered to be a common cause.
Other, more serious causes include nerve compressions caused by herniated disks or bone spurs in the vertebrae. These can create pressure on nerve endings, resulting in ongoing sensitivity and more intense neck pain. Previous sports injuries or certain diseases can also play a factor.
Treatment
Depending on the cause of the neck pain, treatment can include several different options. While most in-home treatment with proper supervision will solve neck pain over time, it's important to see a doctor if the pain persists, is severe or starts spreading to your arms and legs.
Before neck pain happens...
Most neck pain can be avoided by using good posture and creating healthy habits. To help prevent neck pain, remember to keep your head centered over your spine. Some simple changes in your daily routine can also help. For instance, take breaks from sitting at your desk so you can shift positions or walk around and stretch your muscles. Also, consider adjusting your desk or chair to make sure your computer screen is at eye level.
