Back injury after a car accident is a common problem that brings patients into our office. Unfortunately, spinal injury can occur even in a seemingly minor auto accident. The most common type of injury we see following auto accidents is whiplash. This injury occurs when the upper (cervical) spine is thrown forward upon vehicle impact while the lower (lumbar) spine stays more-or-less unmoved. This causes a great deal of strain to be placed on the upper spine and can result in damage to the tendons, muscles, and ligaments surrounding the spine. Those suffering from whiplash often experience back pain, neck pain, and back/neck stiffness in the 12-48 hours following the accident.
Another common type of auto accident injury is herniated and bulging discs resulting from accident impact. When the spine is thrown out of alignment abruptly, the fluid-filled discs between the vertebrae can become dislodged or compressed, resulting in a great deal of sharp, stabbing pain in the back.
The good news is that our chiropractic team provides natural, non-invasive, and drug-free treatment options for any number of auto accident injuries. From spinal adjustment and decompression therapy to massage therapy and corrective exercises, we can help create the ideal treatment plan for you based on your symptoms, specific needs, and lifestyle.
